Carter Wilcox graduated in 2020 after receiving his degree in History and Computer Science. While at Harvard, he focused on applying computational techniques to material datasets, with a strong interest in periods of large-scale cultural transition. He developed this approach across multiple historical contexts (including Feudal Japan and 19th-20th century America) with a culminating thesis on Roman Britain: "Big Data, Brooches, and Boudica." This thesis analyzed 30,000 brooches and 300,000 coins to identify three new historical puzzles: the "Iceni Spike," the "Midland Shift," and the "Gradual Decline." His work also incorporated ice core research to assess the connection between mineral wealth extraction and the deposition of pollutants on alpine glaciers. Carter remains an advocate for computational techniques in archaeoscience, and would be happy to discuss his experiences with any similarly-interested undergraduates.
